CSIS Open Source Software Development
Course Policies: Winter 2012
Professor: Dr. Evans J. Adams, 178 EBH, Phone: 247-7211, Email: ADAMS_E@FORTLEWIS.EDU
Note: These policies are subject to change with a minimum of one week’s advance notice by the instructor.
Office Hours: Office hours are posted on the door of
my office and on my web site at this link. I maintain these hours specifically for
conferences with students. Please observe these hours if you want to be assured
of contacting me. If your schedule conflicts with the office hours, please
contact me (by email or phone, if necessary) to set up an appointment.
Class Notes and Assignments are posted on the Weekly Outline on course’s Moodle site. I have set up links to the Powerpoint presentations I will be using in my lectures on the Daily Schedule.
Most class announcements are made via electronic mail or on Moodle. You
are responsible for any class announcements I make using email or on Moodle. It
is your responsibility to ensure that you are on my class email list. Please notify me if you are not receiving
class announcements via email.

Examinations: An exam on PHP will given when we have
completed that part of the course.
Assignments and Projects:
·
Assignments and due dates will be posted on the
course’s Moodle site.
·
Late work (any work which is not submitted
to the Moodle site prior to the beginning of class)
will not be accepted for grading.
·
If you are going to miss class on the day that
an assignment is due, you may turn it in early, but not late, since the
assignment will usually be discussed in class on the day it is due.
·
In case of illness or other extenuating
circumstances, I may be willing to negotiate the acceptance of late work with a
minimum 20% penalty with prior notification.
Classroom Policies:
·
Computer classrooms like ours have several
advantages and disadvantages. One of the
main disadvantages is the distraction that the computer in front of the student
can provide.
·
In order to maintain an effective learning
environment for the entire class, I will demand (during lectures)
o
that you speak only when recognized by the
instructor, and
o
that you turn off your monitors and not use your
computers unless specifically authorized to do so.
· Students who do not adhere to these classroom policies will be asked to leave the classroom.
Attendance:
· Attendance at all class meetings is expected.
· You are responsible for all material which is covered at any class you may miss in addition to any assignments made or due at that class meeting.
· Students who do not attend class regularly typically do not perform well in this type of course. It is extremely rare that a student who attends class regularly and completes the homework assignments on time will fail any of my courses.
· If you miss class: It will normally not be possible to make up any work, unless arrangements are made in advance.
· If you miss class due to an unforeseen illness or emergency, and wish to ask for extension of assignment deadlines, etc., please contact me immediately by phone, e-mail or otherwise.
· Leaving me a message does not, however, constitute arrangements which have been made. You must actually speak with me, or receive a confirmation email from me acknowledging what arrangements I am willing to make.
· In case of a documented emergency I will attempt to work out a reasonable course of action.
Disabilities: Students with disabilities have equal access and equal opportunity in this course. If you require reasonable accommodations to fully participate in course activities or meet course requirements, you must register with Disability Services, 280 Noble Hall, 247-7459. If you qualify for services, bring your letter of accommodation to me as soon as possible.
Make-Up Exam Policy:
·
PRIOR PERMISSION (at least 24
hours) is required if an exam must be missed for verifiable extenuating
circumstances.
· WITH PRIOR PERMISSION, a makeup exam may be given OR the final exam grade may replace the missed exam grade.
· WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION, a grade of zero is automatically assigned to a missed exam.
Cheating may result in an automatic “F” for the course.
Last Day To Drop: You may drop the course for any reason until Census Date (January 24). Thereafter, I may let you drop with a grade of “W” if your record of attending class and turning in work is nearly perfect; you have taken all exams, and have put forth a visible steady effort in the course, but do not have a passing average. Otherwise you will be dropped with a grade of ‘F’.
