Internship Requirements
CSIS 495 Internship in Computer Science is a 4 credit hour course
(changed from 3 credit hours in the 2003-04 catalog). Also, starting with the 2003-2004 catalog the course counts as an Upper Division CSIS elective
course. In previous catalogs, the course
counts toward upper division General Elective credit only and
does not fulfill CSIS Upper Division elective credit. Please refer questions regarding this to Dr Evans Adams, the CSIS Internship Coordinator.
The Internship Course is offered every
term, including all three summer terms. Students applying for internship credit
should be junior or senior computer science majors. Permission of the CSIS
Internship Coordinator (Dr. Evans Adams)
is required before enrolling for the course.
Course requirements include:
- Locating an Internship Position (follow this link to Tech-Interns.com)
- The student finds employment in the computer
industry (on-campus positions and non-paying positions may also qualify).
- The CSIS Internship Coordinator may be able to
provide assistance in locating employment, but obtaining employment is
the student's responsibility.
- The student then provides the CSIS Internship
Coordinator with a written proposal
(developed jointly with the student’s employment supervisor) which
identifies the job description and the duties / projects which the
student will be performing.
- The student's employment supervisor must agree
to submit a written evaluation (similar to an employee professional
review) of the student's performance on the internship on the internship
proposal.
- The CSIS Internship Coordinator decides if the
proposed employment qualifies for internship credit and notifies the
student of acceptance/rejection of the proposal.
- Internship Responsibilities
- The student performs the proposed duties /
projects to the best of their ability.
- A minimum of 150 hours (approximately 10 hours
per week over a semester) of professional duties is required.
- The student submits a weekly journal entry (via
email) to the CSIS Internship Coordinator identifying the duties
performed for each week on the internship. Journal entries must include:
- A written summary of the work performed during
the week. If no work is performed on the internship during a particular
week, a journal entry is still required.
- An attachment to the email message containing
the Personal Software Process Time
Recording Log for that week. Instructions for filling out the Personal
Software Process Time Recording Log can be obtained
from the CSIS Internship Coordinator. An example of how to fill out the Time
Recording Log is at this link.
- The weekly journal entries are one of the
primary components in computing your grade for the Internship. Failure
to submit weekly logs will result in deductions to your grade.
- Internship Report
- At the end of the internship period, a 3-5 page
(minimum length) report must be submitted to the CSIS Internship
Coordinator.
- The internship report will consist of a detailed
summary of the duties / projects performed on the internship and a
summary of what the student learned on the internship.
- The internship report must be professionally
prepared and must be free of grammatical and spelling errors.
- Supervisor's Evaluation
- The student's professional supervisor must
submit a written evaluation, on company letterhead stationary, of the
intern's performance.
- The evaluation should be in the same format which
the supervisor uses to evaluate regular employees of the organization.
- Internship Presentation
- Internship students will conduct a presentation
for the Student ACM Chapter summarizing their internship experiences.
- The CSIS Internship Coordinator will notify
students when and where the presentation will be conducted.
It is the student's responsibility to ensure
that the CSIS Internship Coordinator receives all of the required documents
prior to the end of the semester (typically the week before final exams) for
which internship credit is requested.
