Interview: Tracy Kidder, author of Mountains Beyond Mountains, with Bridget Irish, Coordinator of First-Year, General Education & Enrichment Experiences and FLC Writing Program Instructor
This recorded interview will focus on Kidder's writing of Mountains Beyond Mountains.

September 5, 2007, 5:30-6pm and every Wednesday through December 12, 2007
KDUR-FM (91.9 & 93.9) Radio Program: "Making a Difference"
This program includes interviews with people who work to "make a difference" in the world. For instance, local dentist, Tom Grams, will discuss his volunteer work in Afghanistan and Nepal. These interviews will focus on Paul Farmer's belief in the power of the individual, as well as the decisions the author, Tracy Kidder, made about writing his book. Host: Bridget Irish, et al.

Common Reading Experience Essay Competition
Competition will be announced Septmeber 14th. Deadline for submission is October 12th. First Prize: $100.; Second Prize: $50.

September 18, 2007, 6:30-7:30pm: Maria's Bookshop, 960 Main Ave., Durango
Book-signing: Paula Huntley, author of The Hemingway Book Club of Kosovo
Huntley spent a year as a volunteer teacher in Kosovo and demonstrates how another individual "made a difference".

Film and Discussion: Bird-Flu - How Safe Are We?
Rx for Survival: A Global Health Challenge
As seen on PBS, narrated by Brad Pitt.

September 27, 2007, 7-9pm: Memorial Student Lounge
Panel Discussion: Issues of Global Public Health
Michelle Chang, PhD, Center for Disease Control Atlanta, "Health Care in Developing Countries". George Luber, PhD, Center for Disease Control Atlanta, "Climate Change & Emerging Health Issues". Chuck Salka, MD, Infectious Disease Specialist, Africa and Mercy Hospital.

October 10, 2007, 7-9pm: Noble 130
Film and Discussion:Aristide: The Endless Revolution
This documentary is about Haiti's first elected president, his rise to power, and especially his downfall. The film provides a basis for discussion about U.S. foreign policy in the Caribbean and its involvement in Haiti's politics, past and present.

October 20, 2007, 8pm: Theater Building
Speak Truth to Power: Voices From Beyond the Dark
A performance especially for students reading Mountains Beyond Mountains, this play will focus on the idea that one person can indeed make a difference in the world. Harry Wu, Human Rights Activist, will be the speaker for the production. Students are also welcome to attend other performances at 8pm on October 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27 and a matinee on October 21.

October 23, 2007, noon-1:30pm: CUB Ballrrom.
FLC Wellness lunchtime event with special guest, Julia Hartsell, HoopDancer. Julia has traveled to Haiti on a reforestation project, returned to Haiti to enhance an orphanage, and volunteered in North Carolina to support HIV/AIDS survivors. How she spreads joy with her hoops by performing and teaching children of all ages. RSVP if you want lunch to Jenn @7693 with your name and choice of vegetarian, turkey, ham, or beef. 4ForBeingFit and Smart Goal Packets will be available because logging kick off day is November 1st. 1/2 hour Administrative Leave and hoops available for use and purchase.

November 10, 2007, 10am-3pm: Ballroom, Student Union Building
Town Hall Forum: Creating a Safer, More Compassionate World
This event will be co-produced with the educational arm of the League of Women Voters. Its focus is on the idea that "one person at a time: can make a difference". There will be a video, two main speakers (Dentist Tom Grams and Diane Wilson, author of An Unreasonable Woman), and several testimonials by people who actively work to create a safer world and, as a result, help defuse fear caused by terrorist acts: by educating, healing, etc. Students from Engineers without Borders who worked on FLC projects in Thailand and Ecuador will participate.
