Dr. Burke’s course websites are now
available through Fort Lewis College’s LMS, canvas, at https://courses.fortlewis.edu/
Only
students and faculty from Fort Lewis College can access these courses directly,
but below you will find some examples to whet your appetite. This is a
screenshot of Brian Burke’s canvas page for Senior Research in Psychology, in
which he focuses on terror management theory (TMT), an influential theory and
body of research in psychology that explores how humans deal with death
anxiety. Students then are guided step-by-step using careful scaffolding—as you
can see from the detailed assignments below—through the process of designing,
conducting, and presenting their own empirical research study. This mentored
research course is a hallmark of both Fort Lewis College and the Psychology
Department and is a prime example of a High-Impact
Educational Practice or HIP.
Here are
the specific assignments that Dr. Burke employs to guide students through the
process of mentored research step-by-step. Dr. Burke has had several students
publish their research in professional journals and present their research at
professional conferences as indicated on his CV.
