About me
I’m a full time faculty member in the new B.A. program in Adventure Education at Fort Lewis College, Colorado’s public liberal arts college.
Adventure education - which is related to outdoor, environmental, and experiential education - involves the purposeful use of adventure to promote personal growth, moral development, group development, leadership development, and ideally, social change.
At Fort Lewis College, we study adventure education from a liberal arts perspective.
To this end, we aim to equip our students with not just technical skills and the ability to lead, teach, and facilitate others, but the ability to think critically, conduct disciplined inquiry, communicate effectively, and to put ideas into action in ways that not only better society but our field-at-large.
I’ve worked in the adventure and outdoor education field - as a program director, staff trainer, field instructor, and consultant - for over 12 years. For 10 of these years, I was affiliated with Outward Bound where I last served as Montana Program Director, overseeing programs in Red Lodge and Dillon, Montana. I’ve also been a social and environmental studies teacher at the elementary and middle school levels and worked in college outdoor programming. In addition, I’m an active supporter of the Association for Experiential Education, and a former board member of the Heartland Regional Council. I completed my baccalaureate degree at Texas A&M University, post-baccalaureate studies at the University of Houston in history and political science, a teaching certificate in secondary social studies education, and a master’s at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I’m also completing doctoral studies in educational leadership and adult education.
In my personal time, I enjoy spending time with my family, telemark skiing, climbing, and reading.
