Tracking the Sunrise (or Sunset)

The sun rises and sets at different times and locations throughout the year. In the summertime, the sun will set at a later time and much farther to the North than it will in the Winter. By watching the horizon at sunset for several weeks you can observe this change taking place. Start this project by making a good sketch of the Western horizon (or Eastern if you want to record the sunrise). Over a time span of at least 6-8 weeks, make observations every 3-4 days, in which you record the sunset time and location. Record the setting angle as accurately as you can. Make careful plots; use graph paper. You can also include diagrams showing the relative positions of the Earth and Sun to help explain your data. Once you are finished with your observations, you should be able to make two plots - one showing the sunset time vs. day, the other will record the sunset location vs. day.  Try to see if you can tell whether the change in sunset time or position is accelerating, decelerating or moving at a constant rate.
