Essay on the Climate Change Negotiations

Your assignment is to write a 6-8 page (doublespaced essay) on the real world global climate change negotiations and reflect on your experiences in the simulated negotiations that took place in the class.

Your essay should do the following.

1.    Describe the impact global warming is expected to have on your country, bringing as much science to bear on the discussion as possible. Explain both the physical climatic changes that are expected to occur in your country and the consequences of those changes for plant, animal and human life in your country.

2.  Describe what has been accomplished thus far, in particular the Framework Convention on Climate Change (1992) and the Kyoto Protocol (1997, finalized in 2001).

3.  The current situation in international efforts to address climate change (including the rejection of the Kyoto Protocol by the United States).

4.  The position that the country (or type of country) you represented has taken in the real world climate change negotiations.

5.  Your goals in representing your country in the negotiations and your successes/frustrations in achieving them.

6.  Insights you gained from the simulation about the climate change issue and/or the process of negotiating international agreements.

You are asked to write this paper on your own.

Essays will be graded both on content and composition.  Regarding the latter, be sure to review the Suggestions for Writing a Good Term Paper in the course web site.
