ECON 369

Majority Vote vs. Point Voting Exercise

You are voting (a referendum) on how your taxpayer money will be spent in a small town.  Here are your choices:

1.  The local animal shelter

2.  A new public park

3.  Downtown revitalization efforts - new trash cans, flower boxes, street lights, etc.

4.  Send local politicians to a conference on "how to treat small town people" in France

5.  Local recycling center

First vote rule:

Majority vote rule:  vote for one - your favorite.

(tally the votes)

Second vote rule:

Point voting.  Rank order your preferences.  Top preference will get 5 points, second preference will get 4, etc.

(tally the votes)

Let's see which one wins in each case.  Do you think one voting method is better than the other?  If so, why?
