Outline (20% of Final Grade)

Returned to Student – by Tuesday, March 20
The detailed outline is a written document including the overall outline of your tutorial.
· The document must include numbered sections and sub-sections with at least one paragraph describing each section/subsection.
· Each section/subsection must have a unique, hierarchical number and title. Refer to this link for an example of the required numbering scheme for sections and subsections.
·
References to be used within each
section/subsection must be identified in each section/subsection and
cited as at
the end of your paper.
·
If you are using MS Word 2007 to create your
paper, you should experiment with the new References feature. This feature can save you considerable time
and energy with respect to managing your reference citations.
·
Failure to follow these directions will
result in the outline being returned to the student with a grade of zero.
·
Please consult with the instructor if you do
not understand what is required for the detailed outline. I
will be happy to review a draft of your detailed outline and give you my
comments.
Do not take the citation of references slightly; students have
historically lost more points because of this than any other facet of the
course. Please refer to my course
policies regarding plagiarism if you are in doubt about when to use
citations.
Another main problem I have found with many students’ writing in this course is failure to use proper paragraph structure. Please refer to the Internet Writing Resources for guidelines on constructing paragraphs. I will use these guidelines when grading your papers (both detailed outline and final written tutorial).
I will use the following writing guidelines when grading your detailed outline and final written tutorial. Use both the spelling and grammar checking features of your word processor. Please follow this link for a sample of writing resources available on the web and use these and any other writing resources you may locate when writing your detailed outline and final written tutorial.
Editorial Guidelines for the detailed outline (use these guidelines instead of the ones stated in the online writing references):
·
Use one inch margins (top/bottom/left/right)
and Times New Roman 12 point font.
·
All pages must be numbered.
·
Use single-column format with double spacing
for the detailed outline.
·
Use the reference citation / endnote format
from the sample ACM Publication provided via
this link to construct your endnotes.
The detailed outline will become the basis for instructor evaluation of your
oral seminar and written tutorial. I view this as the most important
deliverable you will be producing this semester. Any deviations from the
outline (in your final paper) must be approved by the instructor.
All numbered sections/subsections in the detailed outline MUST appear in the final paper unless deviations have been approved by the instructor.
The detailed outline and final paper MUST contain the following sections:
The detailed outline should evolve, section by section, into your
final tutorial paper and should be organized in a manner which 'teaches' the
reader about your topic. You are encouraged to review your detailed outline
with the instructor prior to submitting it for grading if you have any
questions concerning the content and required format.
