CSIS 496 Senior Seminar
Course Policies: Winter 2012

Note: These policies are subject to change with a minimum of two weeks advance notice by the instructor.
Office Hours: Office hours are posted on the door of my office and on my web site. I maintain these hours specifically for conferences with students. Please observe these hours if you want to be assured of contacting me. Please contact me (by email or by phone) to set up an appointment if your schedule conflicts with the office hours.
Please Note: It is your responsibility as a student to ensure that you are properly enrolled in this course. College policy does not permit course additions after census date (January 25). To check your enrollment status, use WEBOPUS and click on Student-Detail-Schedule.
Moodle Course Management System:
· All Course materials will be available on Moodle.
· All deliverables are to be submitted to the instructor using Moodle.

General Policies:
· All deliverables must be prepared using a word processor.
· Each deliverable must include the title of the deliverable, its author, course name and date submitted.
· Each spelling and/or grammatical error will receive a minimum 5% deduction. Use the spelling and grammar checkers provided by your Word Processor and use a technical writing text or one of the Internet Writing Resources to resolve issues of grammar and style.
·
The topic proposal and seminar presentations
must be conducted using MS Powerpoint. (minimum 5% deduction for each
spelling/grammatical error on slides)

Class announcements will be made via email.
Check your email at least once per week. You are responsible for complying
with any such announcements.
Policies regarding due dates:

Deliverables are due at THE BEGINNING OF CLASS
on the due date. Deliverables which are not uploaded to the Moodle site AT THE
BEGINNING OF CLASS are considered late.
· Late work will not be accepted unless prior notification (at least 24 hours) is given to the instructor of verifiable, extenuating circumstances. The instructor will choose whether or not to grant an extension based upon his discretion.
· The student is responsible for all material that may be covered or assignments that may be made or are due at any class meeting which the student has missed.

Please consult with the instructor if you have
any questions concerning the format and content of the deliverables. I am
willing to review and comment upon your documents prior to your turning them
in.
Disabilities:
Students with disabilities
have equal access and equal opportunity in this course. If you require
reasonable accommodations to fully participate in course activities or meet
course requirements, you must register with Disability Services, 280 Noble
Hall, 247-7459. If you qualify for services, bring your letter of
accommodation to me as soon as possible.
Withdrawal/Incomplete Policy:
· All requests to withdraw from the course must be accompanied by a typewritten request, signed by the student, indicating the reason for the withdrawal. The student's portion of the drop slip must be completely filled out, including the CRN number for the course.

All withdrawals after the middle of the term
(defined as Thursday, March
1, 2012 for this class) will appear
on the student's transcript with a grade of 'W' (if the student has a passing
grade at the time of the withdrawal request) or 'F' (if the student does not
have a passing grade at the time of the withdrawal request).
· Grades of 'I' (Incomplete) are rarely granted except in extreme cases regarding verifiable extended illness.
Policies Regarding Reference Citations
and Plagiarism:
pla·gia·rize To use and pass off as one's own (the ideas or writings of another).
·
Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
· Any ideas or passages which are not your own or common knowledge must be appropriately cited as to their source. If you are in doubt as to whether or not to cite a source go ahead and cite it.
· Further information concerning plagiarism, including examples of how not to plagiarize, I strongly suggest that you read these examples:

Each paragraph should contain, at a minimum, one
citation unless the paragraph is written entirely in your own words or
represents your own thoughts and ideas.
· If I suspect that you are plagiarizing, I will assign a grade of zero to the deliverable (detailed outline or final written report) which contains the suspected plagiarism.
· Papers of a tutorial nature should consist mainly of citations to previously published work.
